Livingston Families

39 Million Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse

07/23/2012 15:41 ● By Rick McGarry

Darkness to Light estimates that there are 39,000,000 survivors of child sexual abuse in America today, about one in four girls and one in six boys, 90% of whom were abused by someone they know, not by  a stranger.

Research suggests that adults are unaware of effective steps they can take to protect children from sexual abuse. Most do not know how to recognize signs of sexual abuse and many do not know what to do when sexual abuse is discovered.

Stewards of Children is a sexual abuse prevention workshop offered in September by the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Livingston County. Darkness to Light, which is presenting the workshop, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce the incidence of child sexual abuse by shifting the responsibility from children to adults. They seek to educate adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse, and motivate them to courageous action.

The seminar is free for parents, caregivers, and anyone else who wants to learn how to protect children. It will be offered on Saturday September 18th from 6:30 - 9:30p.m.

Space is limited, so contact or call 517.548.1350 to reserve your seat.
