Photographs of Sleeping Bear Dunes

10/29/2012 14:29 ● By Rick McGarry

Beautiful Sleeping Bear Dunes is a photographic book that attempts to capture Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, recently voted "Most Beautiful Place in America" by ABC's Good Morning America viewers.

"At MyNorth Media, we've written about and photographed Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for three decades," says Deborah Wyatt Fellows, Editor-in-Chief and founder of Traverse Magazine. "We know this landscape intimately, and we never cease to be enchanted by it-- an emotion we're confident you'll share as you enjoy the pages of Beautiful Sleeping Bear Dunes."

Organized by regions, Beautiful Sleeping Bear Dunes includes a detailed map and includes images from Glen Arbor in the north to Empire in the south, and includes the Manitou Islands.

Large, full-color photographs from every season sometimes span both pages and include iconic scenes like DH Day Farm and the Dune Climb.

Now a picturesque relic, the 19th-century fog signal building on South Manitou Island once sounded crucial warnings to passing ships caught in dangerous weather.
The backwater of a beaver dam near Port Oneida is surrounded by shades of russet in the fall. Beaver, bobcat, deer, sandhill cranes, coyote and bear are among the wildlife you might spot on a hike through this peaceful valley.
The dune overlook on Pierce Stocking Drive is a stunningly beautiful study in geology. The sands of Sleeping Bear, dumped by the prevailing southwesterly winds over eons, are perched dunes that rest on a glacial plateau.
Paddling the shallow, warm, slow, sandy-bottomed Crystal River is a rite of summer in the lakeshore. The gentle river is kid friendly and perfect foranyone looking to shed stress.
