And Now, A Word From Our Cartoonist

12/14/2012 14:30 ● By Rick McGarry

My name is Bill Messner-Loebs and since 1982 I have written or drawn comic books (Flash, Wonder Woman, Jonny Quest, Hawkman, Aquaman, Epicurus the Sage, The Hulk, Spiderman, Bliss Alley, the Maxx, Superman and the Batman newspaper strip) for every major company.

This spring I taught a cartooning class at the Howell Parks and Recreation Center. My students were 10 through 14 years old and while I could give them the tips and tricks I’ve learned from thirty-odd years of cartooning, there is nothing that teaches you like working for publication. So our last exercise was in drawing cartoons for Livingston Parent Journal. I gave them each a concept for a single panel gag, gave them a pencil and turned them loose for two hours. I penciled one myself. Then I inked, lettered and bordered each cartoon, in just the way I would for any professional. I think they did a great job and I hope you enjoy what we created together.

Bill's next class starts March 6 at The Commons - Brighton, MI .
