63 Years of Day Camp Traditions
● By Rick McGarry
Varsity Day Camp has been privately owned and operated since 1950. Parents and grandparents who enjoyed their summers at Varsity Day Camp are thrilled that their children and grandchildren can enjoy the same enriching experience that they did as a child.
"Varsity Day Camp is the best!" according to Howdy Holmes, the CEO of Jiffy Mixes. "I attended as a camper. Lots of good, clean fun and family values. As a counselor, I had the opportunity to help other campers enjoy their experiences. As a parent, our son loved his time at Varsity Day Camp."
Judy Bradley Burt and her daughter also attended the camp as well. She describes her cam experience as "a wonderful, fun, care-free time in my life and in our daughter's life, also."
The camp is located in Hamburg Township. Camp Activities are conducted on a 40-acre site located 1/2 mile south of M-36 on Cordley Lake Road on the west shore of Cordley Lake. The program is hightly organized, supervised, child-oriented, and geared for boys and girls, ages 6 through 13.
Twice daily, at flag-rasing and following lunch, staff members announce what activities they will be leading during the next two periods. Campers are free to choose any activities they like each day, including archery, arts & crafts, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, basketball, box hockey, tetherball, volleyball, field hockey, kickball, ga ga, canoeing, rowing, sailing. paddle-boating, nature lore, Red Cross swimming instruction, recreational swim, fishing, and gardening.
The staff is comprised of former campers, college students, teachers, and professionals who are trained to be camp role models. The camp is licensed by the State of Michigan and the Livingston County Health Department.
Camp starts on June 17 and continues through August 9, 8:45-4:20, Monday through Friday. Activities are from 9:30-3:45. Extended care is available from 7:00 - 6:00.
