Great American Backyard Campout

If you're looking for a quick campout close to home, head on over to Island Lake State Recreation Area, who is holding this one time event after being closed to camping for decades. This is part of the National Wildlife Federation's intiative to encourage people to camp, so you can even just set up for the day if you're not up for an overnight. Numerous activities will take place on Saturday, including tug-o-war, ladderball, and nature programs. A free Rec 101: Intro to Fishing will take place on the Huron River, as well as discounted canoeing and kayaking provided by Heavner Canoes. The night will be topped off with a bonfire, s'mores, storytelling, sing-along and night hike. All this is provided FREE, but you must contact the park office at 810-229-7067 to reserve your campsite. Event will take place rain or shine. For more details go to:
